We do have two options when setting up a kit to sell from inventory.
If the part is not set up as a part number in inventory and is sold via the kits setup only, the parts will pull onto the work order individually and on hands will be removed individually, costs and sell prices will update individually as well. There is not a way to factor a discount into this so a price override would be required to accommodate a discount when the kit is sold.
Should you create the part number in inventory and flag it as a kit, you can then enter a sell price that varies from the individual part number prices summed, but it cannot have a cost on the part record or you will overstate your cost of goods sold and relieve too much inventory upon selling. This then means the pricing structure for the kit part number needs to be defined from a field other than cost, and may need its own parts group assignment and pricing structure created.
The other consideration if we create the kit part number in inventory is that checking the kit box on the general tab will stop on hand tracking. This is fine if the part is sold from the kit option on the parts tab of a workorder, but if it is sold directly from the part entry line, it will sell the part and will not impact on-hand quantities, which could lead to shrinkage on those component part numbers and will also invoice with no cost since we can't have a cost on that kit part number.
Build a kit assembly option--
You will set up a part number that you want to use but don't put a cost on that part. Then open an internal workorder, on the addn'l info tab you select the part number, warehouse and qty that you just setup. Then add all the parts and labor to this internal workorder and close\invoice it. It will add the cost and qty to the new part number. Now you can bill out that new part number to the customer. Make sure you put the sell price on the part first.
