Communication Link Failure Error

Overview

The "Communication Link Failure" error occurs when Softbase is unable to establish or maintain a connection to the SQL Server database. When this connection is interrupted, Softbase cannot communicate with the database and is unable to perform normal system operations.

Symptoms

Users may encounter an error message indicating a Communication Link Failure when attempting to access or use Softbase. This typically results in the application being unable to retrieve or save data.

Cause

This error is generally caused by a disruption in communication between the Softbase application server or workstation and the SQL Server environment. Common causes include:

  • Network connectivity issues
  • SQL Server service outages or unavailability
  • Firewall or security settings blocking communication
  • DNS resolution problems
  • Network latency or intermittent connectivity
  • Infrastructure or server-related issues affecting database access

Resolution

Because this error occurs at the database connectivity layer, it is not generated directly by Softbase. The issue originates from the connection between the application and the SQL Server environment.

To resolve the issue, we recommend that your IT team or database administrator review the following:

  1. Verify that the SQL Server is online and accessible.
  2. Confirm network connectivity between the application server/workstation and SQL Server.
  3. Review firewall and security settings to ensure SQL Server traffic is allowed.
  4. Validate DNS resolution and server name configuration.
  5. Check SQL Server logs and Windows Event Logs for connectivity-related errors.
  6. Investigate any recent infrastructure, network, or security changes that may have affected communication.
